Pet Travel: UAE to United Kingdom
Bringing your dog from the UAE to the United Kingdom requires careful planning. The UK only accepts dogs as manifest cargo (no in-cabin or excess baggage), requires a tapeworm treatment 1–5 days before arrival, and a Great Britain health certificate issued close to departure by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).

| # | Step | When |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Microchip implantation Your dog must have a 15-digit ISO-compliant microchip. This is a small chip implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades — it takes seconds and your dog barely notices. The microchip is your dog's permanent identification and every document from this point forward must reference the microchip number. Critical: the microchip must be implanted before any vaccinations. If your dog is vaccinated before being microchipped, those vaccinations will not be recognised as valid and your dog will be refused entry. | Before vaccinations |
| 2 | Rabies vaccination Your dog needs a valid rabies vaccination administered by a licensed veterinarian. The certificate must identify your dog (breed, colour, sex, date of birth or age, microchip number) and record the vaccine name, manufacturer, batch number, date administered, and duration of validity. Dogs must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of vaccination. Your dog's rabies vaccination must be administered at least 21 days before travel — this waiting period is strictly enforced by UK authorities and there are no exceptions. Current rabies boosters administered before the previous vaccine expired may not require the 21-day wait. The rabies vaccination certificate must be in English to be accepted on arrival in the UK. | At least 21 days before travel |
| 3 | IATA-approved travel crate Cargo: Label the crate with 'Live Animal' stickers on all sides. Secure the crate door with cable ties — this prevents the door from opening during handling. Include a water bottle attached to the outside of the crate door, food in a ziplock bag taped to the top of the crate, absorbent pee pads on the floor, and a familiar blanket at the back for comfort. No loose toys inside the crate. | At least 3 weeks before travel |
| 4 | Book your flight Refer to the Travel Options section above for detailed booking instructions per airline. Book at least 3 weeks before departure — space for live animals is limited per flight across all travel modes. | At least 3 weeks before travel |
| 5 | Core vaccinations DHPP covers distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus — these are the standard core vaccinations for dogs. The United Kingdom does not require these for entry, but MOCCAE requires them for export clearance from the UAE. Without current core vaccinations, your MOCCAE export certificate will not be issued. They are also required by most airlines. Make sure your dog's vaccination book shows current DHPP status. If your dog's boosters have lapsed, your vet can administer them — ideally at least 14 days before travel to allow time for the vaccines to take effect. | At least 14 days before travel |
| 6 | Internal and external parasite treatment The United Kingdom does not require general internal or external parasite treatment for entry — the only mandatory UK treatment is the separate praziquantel-based tapeworm treatment (see Tapeworm Treatment step). MOCCAE and some airlines may require proof of internal and external parasite treatment administered within 14 days of travel for export clearance. Your vet should administer a broad-spectrum internal parasite treatment and a flea/tick treatment, and record the product name, dose, and date on your dog's health certificate. Critical: do not use an internal parasite treatment containing praziquantel at this stage. The United Kingdom requires a separate praziquantel-based tapeworm treatment within a strict 1–5 day window before arrival — using it too early means you will need to repeat it. | Within 14 days of travel |
| 7 | Great Britain health certificate The United Kingdom requires a specific health certificate format — the Great Britain pet health certificate, issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV) authorised by the UAE government. This is different from a standard vet health certificate and not all UAE veterinary clinics are familiar with this form. Our vetted relocation partners coordinate directly with OV-authorised vets in the UAE as part of their service. Your vet will complete the clinical examination and fill in all sections of the form except the tapeworm treatment section, which is completed separately in the next step. This certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel. | Within 10 days of travel |
| 8 | Tapeworm treatment The United Kingdom requires all dogs to be treated for tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) between 24 and 120 hours (1 to 5 days) before arriving in the United Kingdom. The treatment must contain praziquantel and must be administered by a veterinarian. Your dog will be refused entry to the United Kingdom without this. This is one of the most common reasons for dogs being denied entry — get the timing exactly right. Your vet will record the date, time, product name, and their stamp and signature on your Great Britain health certificate. | 1–5 days before arrival |
| 9 | MOCCAE export health certificate The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) is the UAE government body that authorises all animal exports. For the UK, your MOCCAE visit does two things: MOCCAE attests your Great Britain health certificate, and MOCCAE issues the UAE export health certificate. Both documents are required for your dog to leave the country. Apply online first through the MOCCAE portal using your UAE Pass — submit your dog's microchip number, Great Britain health certificate, and any additional documents required by the destination country. Pay the MOCCAE fee online. There is no approval step — once your application is submitted and paid for, bring your dog and their travel crate to the MOCCAE cargo village at your departure airport (DXB cargo village if flying from Dubai, or AUH cargo village if flying from Abu Dhabi). You must go to the cargo village that matches your departure airport. A MOCCAE veterinarian will verify all documents including your tapeworm treatment record, inspect the crate, examine your dog, and stamp the certificates. MOCCAE cargo village is open 24/7. This step must be completed within 24–48 hours of your tapeworm treatment to ensure the record is fresh enough for MOCCAE to accept. Note that airlines typically also require the export certificate to be issued a minimum number of hours before the flight (commonly 72 hours) — confirm exact timing with your airline. If you'd prefer a specialist to handle it, our vetted relocation partners manage the entire MOCCAE process on your behalf. | Within 24–48 hours of tapeworm treatment |
Crates for excess baggage and cargo travel must comply with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animals Regulations. Your dog must be able to stand fully upright, turn around, and lie down in a natural position.
International Air Transport Association (IATA) formula
- Length = nose-to-tail-base (A) + half of leg length (B)
- Width = shoulder width (C) × 2
- Height = top of head or ear tip (whichever is taller) to floor when standing, plus 5 cm clearance
Measure your dog standing naturally — never crouching. For an exact recommended crate model based on your dog's measurements, run a personalised search below.
Dogs entering Great Britain as cargo must clear through an approved Border Control Post (BCP).
Most UAE to Great Britain cargo-only moves require Balai rules compliance including IPAFFS pre-notification by a UK-based importer. If you are travelling on the same flight or within 5 days of your pet (non-commercial movement), your relocation partner will advise on the required declaration at the time of booking.
The United Kingdom bans certain dog breeds including Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and XL Bully. Mixed breeds matching these types are also prohibited.
If documentation is incomplete or the tapeworm timing is wrong, your dog may be quarantined for up to four months at the owner's expense.
Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief through HMRC can remove the 20% VAT charge on pet shipping costs for permanent relocations. Our vetted relocation partners will flag this option during booking and can advise on timing and eligibility.
The UAE is classified as a listed country. No rabies antibody titre test (RNATT) is required.
Planning to return to the UAE later? Consider getting a rabies antibody titre test (RNATT) done before leaving — this can simplify re-entry if returning from a country not on the UAE low-risk list. The blood draw must be at least 30 days after rabies vaccination, and results take approximately 2–3 weeks.

The United Kingdom bans five breed types under the Dangerous Dogs Act: Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and XL Bully. Whether a dog falls within a banned type is decided on physical characteristics rather than pedigree, so crossbreeds matching the type are also prohibited. Additional restrictions on this route come from airline policies (Emirates SkyCargo, Virgin Atlantic Cargo, British Airways IAG Cargo) and from UAE export rules. Brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds face additional seasonal restrictions during May to October. Crossbreeds of listed breeds are also subject to these restrictions.
